Security Analysts Say Ransomware Group Lockbit Might Have Been Hack

Could It Be a Case of the Hacker Getting Hacked?

Lockbit might have gotten a dose of its own medicine, at least according to cybersecurity analysts.

According to Reuters, the ransom-seeking cybercriminals known for high-profile attacks appear to have suffered a breach of their own based on a rogue post on one of the group’s websites. Security analysts who follow the gang seem to confirm the breach.

Last week, one of Lockbit’s darkweb sites was replaced with a message that said: “Don’t do crime CRIME IS BAD xoxo from Prague.” The message included a link to an apparent cache of leaked data.

Lockbit Hack Is Legit, Sources Say

Reuters to date has been unable to immediately verify the data. However, it appears that it includes chats between the hackers and their victims, among other things. Security analysts who have pored over the material say the information appear to be legit and authentic.

“It’s legit,” said Jon DiMaggio, the chief security strategist of cybersecurity company Analyst1.

Christiaan Beek, senior director of threat analytics at cybersecurity firm Rapid7, agreed, saying that the leak “looks really authentic.” Beek added that he was struck by how the reported hack shows Lockbit’s hackers hustling even small businesses for modest payouts.

“They attack everyone,” he said.

Reuters could not immediately reach the ransomware gang or establish who had apparently leaked their data. Some darkweb sites associated with Lockbit appeared to be inoperative on Thursday, displaying a note saying they would be “working soon.”
