CTOS SecureID Uncovers 335K Personal Data Breaches

CTOS Data Systems Sdn Bhd (“CTOS”) today released statistics from CTOS SecureID, detecting 335,000 personal identifiable information (PII) on the dark web from 58,000 consumers over the last 3 years. CTOS SecureID continuously monitors the dark web and alerts users when matching information is uncovered. The breaches detected comprised of credit card and debit card details, passport information, email addresses and phone numbers.

With the digital economy increasingly playing a significant role in Malaysia’s economic growth, consumers are increasingly engaging in online transactions and are being exposed to digital threats. In the past year, Malaysia has witnessed several significant data breaches in the telecommunication, broadcasting, banking, aviation and e-commerce sectors, which have adversely affected millions of customers.

To help the public guard against these threats, CTOS SecureID is a fraud protection and credit monitoring service aimed at protecting consumers against identity theft, fraud and scams. Launched in 2021, CTOS SecureID’s dark web monitoring feature scans more than 1.4 billion data breach records to detect any leaked personal information. With CTOS SecureID, subscribers will be able to monitor and safeguard their personal information and finances. By monitoring a subscriber’s active credit files and alerting them to any changes, the service provides an early warning of any possible issues with their credit. The subscriber can then take the necessary action to address the breach, such as changing passwords or shutting down certain accounts.

CTOS SecureID also provides takaful coverage of up to RM200,000 for financial losses due to fraudulent transactions. Other benefits include alerts on any changes in subscribers’ credit profiles such as new credit applications, missed payments, credit limit changes, closure of credit facilities, bankruptcy, litigation cases as well as possible data breaches.
